Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Theme: #48 "Promise me one thing... Please come back."
Characters: Squall, Rinoa
Summary: Rinoa hasn't got less serious, but she is more accepting.
It hasn't got less serious since the first time. Rinoa has calmed down, of course, accepted her fate as the wife of a prominent and capable SeeD whose talents are always in demand. She doesn't cling to Squall as she did that first time, but she still watches him go with her heart in her mouth, wondering if he'll come back. One day, she knows, he won't.
"Promise me one thing," she'd said to him, then. "Please come back."
"I will," he'd said, kissing her clumsily -- always awkward with public occasions, formal or informal: and they'd had an audience by then, of course. She'd savoured the kiss, the brief taste of him and the quick squeeze of his arms around her before he'd walked away. He hadn't promised, and he never would.
She could live with that.
"I'll see you soon," she'd said to him this time -- a reminder as much as anything. He'd smiled: he'd gotten better at that over the years. She'd petted his hair into place, wondering if there was a thing in the world -- gel or spell or haircut -- that could keep it from perpetually falling into his eyes.
Still, she isn't surprised when Quistis calls her.
